I've spent these past few days catching up on some YA books ... books that have been on my reading list for a while, but that I never seem to have time to read. The first book, Meg Medina's Burn Baby Burn is a real page turner!! Historical fiction in nature, the book follows a young adult during a terrifying time in late 1970s when serial killer Son of Sam stalked young couples in New York and the city was under siege of various arson scenes and a massive blackout! Medina smoothly ties these historical events in with the inner workings of Nora's dysfunctional family, her dreams for the future, and young love.
The second book on my list was Heather Dixon's novel Entwined. I wasn't as impressed with Entwined, but for those who like fairy tales, it will be a positive read. A retelling of the famous "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" story, this novel follows Princess Azalea and her sisters' experiences after the death of their mother and their adventures in the magical world of the Keeper. If one is familiar with the original fairy tale, then there are no surprises to be found here ... in fact, everything and everyone follows the same path. The only exception is the relationship between the King and his daughters ... throughout most of the book there is a great divide between the thirteen characters, and while the immediate cause/effect is obviously a result of the deep grief felt by the King, it is never really explained what originally caused the division between the family members. The lack of information left me wanting ... and I never really found a satisfying answer.
This March the Skinner Library will host its first ever MARCH MADNESS Book Tournament!! In order to get prepared, we are asking ALL Skinner Scholars to nominate their TOP 5 favorite YA (young adult) books for the upcoming tourney! LFs will be asked to take some time next week to allow students to sign into the nomination site. All you need to do is list the title and author of your favorite YA book(s) and then wait until the 1st of March for the MADNESS to begin!!!

First, we are currently hosting our blind auditions for the Skinner VOICE! Be sure to mark your calendars for February 27th as that is the night of our LIVE SHOW!!! We hope as many Skinner Scholars as possible can attend!
Next, the Skinner Guild, a parent/student book club, is currently reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. If you and your parent want to join us, just stop by the library to pickup a few copies of the novel!
Also, we are getting ready for our next Skinner BEYOND Day. On January 30th, from 3-4:15, we are holding our annual Harry Potter Day! This year we are replanting Mandrake plants!! Be sure to bring your earmuffs! :)
And finally, I just purchased copies of these four books ... books YOU wanted us to get from the fall Book Fair. They should be here in just a few weeks!
Next Tuesday, October 24th, Skinner Middle School's library will open its doors to the supernatural: werewolves and vampires! Who will come out on top? Will it even matter? Afterall, Skinner Scholars are mainly attending for the chance to make Vampire Blood, Wolfsbaine Potion, and supernatural crafts; as well as partake in the deliciousness of a Vampire Shake and to see if they can use their newly found fangs in the "Blood Jello" eating contest!
Our order of new items for the library are in!! If you've been waiting for some HORROR and/or new graphic novels, be sure to stop by and take a peek at our latest offerings!
Well, I just submitted the "official" order for new titles. It will take a few weeks, but soon you'll see a TON of new books on your library shelves! While I could go on and on about all the topics that will be added to our non-fiction collection, I'm positive most of you just want to know what FICTION books we're bringing into Skinner. Let's just say I really REALLY REALLY listened to all of you! People wanted more graphic novels and manga ... I purchased more graphic novels and manga! People wanted HORROR! I purchased horror. Overall we have about 200 new novels and books coming our way! SCORE!!!!
